The Premier League is an English professional football league contested by 20 teams. Seasons run from August to May. Teams play 38 games each. Every year 3 teams are relegated and 3 teams playing in Football League Championship are promoted. Welsh clubs that compete in the English football league system can also qualify.

The predecessor of Premier League is Football League Championship, founded in 1888. It is the oldest football competition in the world. League was formed in current form on 20 February 1992.

The Premier League is the most-watched football league in the world, broadcast in 212 territories to 643 million homes and a potential TV audience of 4.7 billion people. In the 2014–15 season, the average Premier League match attendance exceeded 36,000, second highest of any professional football league behind the Bundesliga's 43,500.

The most successful team is Manchester United with 20 titles, Liverpool won 18 times, Arsenal 11 times. In total, 47 clubs have competed since the inception of the Premier League in 1992. In mid-2000s was the dominance of the "Big Four". Chelsea, Arsenal, Liverpool and Manchester United. In years 2002-2009, they usually dominated the top four spots, which secured them UEFA Champions League qualification. In season 2003–04 Arsenal won league without losing single game.   

Top scorer of Premier League history is Alan Shearer with 260 goals, followed by Wayne Rooney (193) and Andrew Cole (187)

The Premier League ranks third in the UEFA coefficients of leagues based on performances in European competitions over the past five seasons. The top 4 teams qualify for Champions League, fifth team automatically qualifies for the UEFA Europa League, just as winners of the FA Cup and League Cup. English teams had won Champions League 4 times.
