The UEFA Europa League (previously called the UEFA Cup) is football club competition organized by UEFA since 1971 for European football clubs. Clubs qualify for the competition based on their performance in their national leagues and cup competitions.
For the Europa League qualify lower standing teams playing in top European leagues and champions of lower European leagues. Qualification for the competition is based on UEFA coefficients. Competition was previously called UEFA Cup, since the 2009/10 season is competition known by current name.
27 different clubs has won the title, 12 of them have won the title more than once. The most successful club in the competition is Sevilla. Sevilla won title 5 times, Liverpool, Juventus and Internazionale 3 times.
The competition's first anthem was composed by Yohann Zveig and recorded by the Paris Opera in early 2009. The anthem is to be played before every Europa League game at a stadium hosting such an event and also before every television broadcast of a Europa League game.
The competition was originally a pure knockout tournament. All ties were two-legged, including the final. Since the 1997/98 season, the finale became just one game. All the ties remained two-legged. From the 2009–10 season, there are 8 extra teams. Teams are divided to 12 groups of four teams with the top two placed teams in each group progressing. The play-off is competed of 4 rounds of two-legged knockout rounds and a one-off final.
The current champions
are Sevilla, beating Liverpool 3:1 in the finale. Liverpool were leading after
half time. But in the start of second half, Gameiro equaled and Coke scored 2
goals in minutes 64 and 70. Sevilla won title in 3 consecutive season of the
competition. The current tournament sponsors are FedEx, Heineken International,
UniCredit.
