Russian Premier League is the top division professional association football league in Russia. Competition is contested by 16 teams.
Champions of the league enter the Champions League group stage. The second team of the table enters the Champions League qualification, third and fourth teams enter the UEFA Europa League qualification. The last two teams are relegated to the Russian National Football League.The league is currently called Rosgosstrakh Russian Football Championship for sponsorship reasons.
Competitions was found in 1992 after the dissolution of the Soviet Union. Teams in the Russian Premier League play each other twice, once at home and once away, for a total of 30 matches. Domestic cup is called Russian Cup.
Unlike most other European football leagues, the league traditionally ran from March to November to avoid playing games in the cold and snowy weather in winter. Since 2012–13 season, the league run the season from autumn to spring, alike most other European competition. League is currently ranked seventh in the UEFA rankings of leagues based on performances in European competitions over the last five-years.
Spartak Moscow is the most successful teams in history of Russian Premier League. They won title 9 times. CSKA Moscow were champions 6 times and Zenit St. Petersburg 4 times.
Oleg Veretennikov is all-time top scorer with 143 goals in 274 appearances. Aleksandr Kerzhakov is second (138/326), third is Dmitri Kirichenko (129/377). The most appearances made Sergei Semak (456). Dmitri Ananko and Dmitry Khlestov both won title 9 times in 1992–94 and 1996–01 with Spartak Moscow.
Current champions are CSKA Moskva winning 2 points ahead SK Rostov.
