The Swiss Super League is the top level of the Swiss football league system. For sponsorship reason, the league is known as the Raiffeisen Super League. The Swiss Super League is ranked 11th in Europe according to UEFA's ranking of league coefficients, which is based upon Swiss team performances in European competitions in last 5 years.
Swiss Super League was found in 1897. Original name of the competition was Serie A. League was divided in three groups. Winners of groups were fighting each other in finale group. This system was used till year 1933. Since this season, there was one league contested by 16 teams. Number of teams playing were decreasing for current ten.
Teams are playing four games against each. In total, 36 games. Champions qualify straight for Champions League group stage. Team in second place plays Champions League qualification. For Europa League qualification qualify third and fourth team. The last teams of the table is relegated. Domestic cup is called Swiss Cup.
Grasshopper Club
Zürich is the most successful club with 27 titles. Second is Basel with 19
titles and third Servette FC, winning league 17 times. Current champion is
Basel. They won Super League title in seven consecutive season. Last season,
they won 14 points ahead second Young Boy Bern and 29 points ahead third
Lucern. Zurich, league winner of 2008/09 season were relegated to Challenge
League last season. Lausanne were promoted from Challenge League.
