Primeira Liga is the top professional association football division of the Portuguese football league system. Competition is contested by 18 teams (since 2014/15). The two worst teams are relegated and replaced by the top-two teams from Segunda Liga.
League was founded in 1934, it was officialised in 1938 and named Primeira Divisão. In 1999 it recovered the original naming. The Primeira Liga has increased its reputation in the last few years. For the first time in the 2011–12 season, the league was in the 5th place of UEFA's league ranking. Currently is Primeira Liga sixth.
A total of 70 teams have competed in the Primeira Liga, but only five have been crowned champions. Among them, the "Big Three" – Benfica (35 titles), Porto (27) and Sporting CP (18) – have won all but two Primeira Liga titles. The other winners are Belenenses (1945–46) and Boavista (2000–01). The "Big Three" clubs are usually occupying first three positions and appearing frequently in UEFA competitions.
Champions and the second team of the table enter Champions League group stage. The third team have to beat opponent in the Champions League qualification, fourth and fifth team enter Europa League qualification. Last two teams are relegated to Segunda Liga.
Fernando Peyroteo is Primeira Liga all-time top scorer. He scored 331 times. Eusébio scored 319 goals, Fernando Gomes 318.
Current champions are
Benfica. It was their third title in a row. Jonas, the top scorer of the season
scored 32 goals. FC Porto won title in 4 consecutive season in 2005/06 –
2008/09.
