The LOTTO Ekstraklasa is a Polish professional football league at the top of the Polish football league system. Competition is contested by 16 clubs, operating a system of promotion and relegation with the I Liga. Teams play twice against each other, once at home, once away. In total 30 games.
League was officially formed as Liga Piłki Nożnej in 1927. A total of 80 clubs have played in the top division of Polish football since its foundation. 16 clubs have won the title. The most successful teams are Górnik Zabrze and Wisła Kraków with 14 titles. Górnik Zabrze won their last title in 1988 and in last season were relegated to the I Liga. Ruch Chorzów were champions 12 times. Current champions Legia Warsaw won league 11 times.
After 30 games regular season, teams spit in two groups. The higher half plays in title group and the bottom half in relegation group. Teams in groups play against each other once, so every team plays 37 games in one season. In title group, the champions enter the Champions League qualification round. Europa League qualification round enter teams in 2-4 place. Two worst teams in relegation group are relegated to I Liga.
All-time top scorer is Ernst Pohl with 186 goals. Lucjan Brychczy scored a goal 182 times and Tomasz Frankowski 167 times. Łukasz Surma played 524 games. Dariusz Marzec is current league president.
Last season, Legia
won the title 3 points ahead Piast. Ekstraklasa is currently ranked 22th in the
UEFA rankings of leagues based on performances in European competitions over
the last five-years.
