Ligue 1 is the primary French football competition and the top division of the French football league system. Competition is contested by 20 clubs, it operates on a system of promotion and relegation with Ligue 2.
Ligue 1 is one of the top national leagues, currently ranked fifth in Europe behind the Spanish La Liga, English Premier League, the German Bundesliga and the Italian Serie A. Best 2 teams qualify straight for the Champions League group stage. The third-placed team enters the third qualifying round. The fourth-placed team qualifies for the UEFA Europa League. The winners of domestic cups - Coupe de France and Coupe de la Ligue qualify for the Europa League.
Competition was found in 1932. A total of 76 clubs have played in Ligue 1 from its foundation. Marseille, Montpellier, Nice, and Rennes are the only founding members of the league playing in Ligue 1 currently. In 1932, the league was called National. Year, later was renamed to Division 1. Current name was introduced in 2002.
Saint-Étienne is the most successful club with 10 titles. Marseille won league 9 times, Nantes 8 times, Lyon and Monaco 7 times. Table of top scorers leads Delio Onnis with 299 goals in 449 games. Followed by Bernard Lacombe (255/497) and Hervé Revelli (216/389). Mickaël Landreau made most appearances – 618.
Paris Saint-Germain won title in last season by 21 point ahead the second Lyon. It was their fourth title in a row. Lyon developed to win league seven times in a row in years 2001/02 – 2007/08. FC Nantes holds the League record for longevity with 44 consecutive seasons (1963–2007).
